The NNPC Pension Scheme was set up in 1983 as a non-contributory defined benefit scheme. In 1986 it was transformed into Trust Fund known as the Incorporated Trustees of NNPC Pension Fund. Following the enactment of the Pension Reform Act (PRA) 2004, the Fund was incorporated into a Limited Liability Company known as NNPC Pension Fund Limited (NPFL) on 31^st January 2006 to manage the Scheme. NNPC Opted to continue its defined benefit scheme and with staff contributing to the Scheme

In line with the PRA, the management of the Pension Assets was transferred to Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) with the Pension Fund Custodians (PFCs) taking custody and the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) acting as the regulator. The PFAs, PFCs and PENCOM earn management fees.
